Digital Publishing: 10 Reasons Why It Should Be Mobile
10 Mobile Facts for Publishers

These days publishers are standing at a turning point: the recently introduced new technologies have caused important changes in people's way of reading and, consequently, in publishing industry. Today publishers have to follow mobile trends and it is no longer enough to have a pdf version of the book or magazine.

One of the best solutions for digital publishing industry is mobile apps. Applications can provide publishers with an effective way 1) to satisfy the needs of the end readers and 2) distribute the digital edition to a wider audience. Besides, mobile apps help publishers to reach smartphone and tablets users.

So, why is it so important for publishers to focus their attention on mobile users? Here are some stats data for consideration.

Fact #1. Usually a typical hardcover book costs approximately $25, printing and binding costs $3, plus warehousing costs another $2. Mobile solutions will eliminate these costs, which may result in almost 40% savings.

Fact #2. Newspapers which have mobile digital solutions are becoming big players in the ebook market. For example, the New York Times, which has joined with startups Byliner and Vook and publishes original and archive material.

Fact #3. Price Waterhouse Coopers, in their Global Entertainment and Media Outlook report, predicts that e-books will make up 50% of the U.S. trade book market by 2016. And these ebooks will be read on Apple, Amazon and Android tablets

Fact #4. 91% of affluent online males use a PC every day, compared to 77% for smartphones, and 50% for tablets. (Source: Luxury Marketing: The Digital Anatomy of the Affluent Male)

Fact #5. 78% of U.S. adults with annual incomes of $75,000 and over have smartphones. (Source: Pew Internet)

Fact #6. The iPad's share in tablet web traffic is 88%, followed by Amazon's Kindle Fire with 3.6 %. (Source: Chitika)

Fact #7. 50% of tablet owners prefer to read news, magazines, and books on screen, rather than on paper. (Source: Gartner)

Fact #8. In average mobile Internet users spend 117 minutes a day online on the devices, and 140 minutes on the desktop PCs or laptops. (Source: CMO Council)

Fact #9. 2 in 5 US tablet owners read news, books and magazines on their tablets. (Source: 3DIssue)

Fact #10. 40% of tablet owners regularly read magazines on their gadgets. (Source: 3DIssue)

It sounds solid, doesn't it?
